Surrounded by vineyards and rolling countryside, this experience offers a wonderful introduction to Uruguay’s emerging wine culture.
Later in the day, visit a small countryside farm for a hands-on farm-to-table empanada cooking experience. Learn local techniques and recipes while preparing traditional empanadas together before sitting down to enjoy the meal in a relaxed rural setting.
This evening, unwind in the tranquil atmosphere of Carmelo, known for its vineyards, riverside landscapes, and slower pace of life.
Day 3 (Wed, March 3) - Montevideo
Day 4 (Thurs, March 4) - Montevideo
Day 5 (Fri, March 5) - Punta del Este & Casapueblo
Today we explore Uruguay’s scenic Atlantic coast and the stylish seaside region surrounding Punta del Este.
During your city tour, you will see the exact point where the Río de la Plata gradually becomes the Atlantic Ocean, as well as some of the region’s most famous landmarks and beaches. Highlights include the Punta del Este lighthouse, the elegant coastal neighborhoods, the unique wavy bridge designed by engineer Lionel Viera in La Barra, and of course, the iconic “Fingers” sculpture emerging from the sand at Playa Brava.
We will also visit the remarkable Museo de Arte Contemporáneo Atchugarry (MACA), a striking contemporary art museum set within expansive natural grounds featuring sculpture gardens, rotating exhibitions, and the work of internationally recognized Uruguayan artist Pablo Atchugarry.
Later, we continue to the iconic Casapueblo, the former home and studio of artist Carlos Páez Vilaró. Perched dramatically above the sea at Punta Ballena, the whitewashed structure resembles a Mediterranean village sculpted into the cliffs and is considered one of Uruguay’s most emblematic landmarks.
Day 6 (Sat, March 6) - Asuncion, Paraguay
This morning, we bid farewell to Uruguay and take a short two hour flight to Asunción, one of South America’s oldest capitals and a city that offers a fascinating contrast to the European influences of Uruguay.
As soon as you touch down in Asunción, you’ll notice a dramatic change in landscape and atmosphere. Asunción’s sub-tropical climate breathes life into the landscape, with towering palms, flowering trees, and dense foliage that line its boulevards and parks, creating an inviting and almost jungle-like ambiance.
Upon arrival, enjoy an introductory tour of Asunción, a relaxed riverside capital where modern development blends with historic architecture, leafy neighborhoods, and strong Guaraní cultural traditions. Depending on timing and group interests, visits may include the historic center, the Palacio de López presidential palace, the National Pantheon of the Heroes, traditional markets, artisan shops, and scenic viewpoints along the Costanera overlooking the Paraguay River.
Asunción remains largely undiscovered by international tourism, offering visitors an authentic glimpse into everyday life in Paraguay and a very different perspective on South America than its more heavily visited neighbors.
This evening, settle into your hotel and enjoy a relaxed evening in the Paraguayan capital.
Day 7 (Sun, March 7) - Paraguayan Cultural Heritage
Today, journey east of Asunción into the countryside and the heart of Paraguay’s cultural heritage along the region known as the “Golden Circuit.”
This immersive experience offers a rare opportunity to connect with local communities while exploring picturesque villages, artisan traditions, and the slower rhythms of everyday Paraguayan life. Throughout the day, you will discover the deep cultural heritage that continues to shape Paraguay today.
We will make special visits to the home workshops of artisans — places rarely encountered by ordinary tourists. Meet skilled master carvers, ceramic artisans, and ñandutí (“spiderweb lace”) weavers represent deeply rooted community traditions and ancestral knowledge. We will learn not only about their crafts but also about the personal stories, traditions, and community life behind them.
Along the way, enjoy a traditional Paraguayan lunch accompanied by folkloric music and dance.
In the late afternoon, we pause along the shores of Lake Ypacaraí known for its scenic views and relaxed atmosphere.
More than simply sightseeing, today offers meaningful cultural exchange.
Day 8 (Mon, March 8) - Photographic Boat Excursion & Nature
Enjoy a relaxed morning at leisure in Asunción. You may wish to rest, explore independently, visit a café, or simply enjoy the slower pace of the Paraguayan capital.
After lunch, we travel to Estación Puerto Olivares for a scenic photographic boat excursion offering a glimpse into Paraguay’s river culture and natural beauty.
Cruise through peaceful waterways and wetlands while observing local birdlife, riverside communities, fishing traditions, and the changing landscapes that shape daily life along Paraguay’s rivers. This excursion is designed not only for photography enthusiasts, but for anyone interested in nature, culture, and the quieter rhythms of Paraguay beyond the cities.
Depending on weather and seasonal conditions, opportunities may include spotting waterbirds, traditional wooden boats, and beautiful reflections of the surrounding landscapes during the softer afternoon light.
Return to Asunción in the evening.
Day 9 (Tues, March 9) - Franciscan and Jesuit Legacies
Today we journey south into the Paraguayan countryside to explore the religious, artistic, and cultural legacies left by the Franciscan and Jesuit missions.
Our first major stop is Yaguarón, home to one of Paraguay’s most beautiful Franciscan churches, renowned for its richly carved wooden altar and colonial religious art.
Continuing southward, we visit Santa María de Fe, one of the historic Jesuit mission towns where elements of the region’s mission heritage remain visible in local traditions, museums, and daily life.
This evening, enjoy a peaceful overnight stay at Estancia Tacuaty, a traditional Paraguayan countryside estancia offering an authentic rural atmosphere and warm hospitality.
Day 10 (Wed, March 10) - Fauna & Constellations of the Southern Sky
Today we will visit a wildlife refuge dedicated to rehabilitating native Paraguayan animals. You will see native animals, such as the giant anteater, peccary, monkeys, and wild cats, as well as learn about ongoing conservation efforts and challenges.
Later, travel to San Cosme y Damián. This mission site is unique because it was never abandoned - in fact, the church continues to be used to this day!
One of the priests at the missions was an astronomer and San Cosme and Damian was an important astronomical observatory during the 1700s. You will learn about Father Suarez' famous book published in 1720 predicting the exact dates of the eclipses and moon phases for the next century with astonishing precision.
San Cosme y Damián also boasts and Astrological Center with a presentation about the night sky of the Southern hemisphere and insight into the interpretations of the constellations by both the Spanish and Guarani.
End the day with a contemplative night walk the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Santísima Trinidad del Paraná - night illumination and music make this night visit magical.
Day 11 (Thurs, March 11) - Yerba Mate, Jesuit Ruins, Indigenous Community
Today’s experiences are deeply interconnected, offering insight into the cultures, traditions, and historical encounters that helped shape Paraguayan culture.
Begin the day with an engaging tour and tasting experience at a traditional yerba mate plantation. Long before European arrival, yerba mate was already an important ceremonial and social beverage among the Guaraní people, who recognized the stimulating and medicinal qualities of the native plant. Later, Jesuit missionaries learned from Indigenous communities and eventually discovered methods to successfully germinate and cultivate yerba mate on a larger scale, transforming it into one of the region’s most important cultural and economic products.
As you learn about the cultivation, harvesting, and preparation of yerba mate, you will also gain a deeper understanding of how Indigenous knowledge, Jesuit influence, and local traditions became intertwined throughout the region’s history.
We then continue exploring the UNESCO-listed Jesuit mission sites of Santísima Trinidad del Paraná and Jesús de Tavarangue, whose monumental ruins provide remarkable insight into the ambitious Jesuit communities established during the 17th and 18th centuries. As we walk among the preserved stone structures, your local guide will share the fascinating story of the missions and their lasting influence on Paraguayan language, music, agriculture, and culture.
Later, we visit a local Mby’a Guaraní Indigenous community for a meaningful cultural exchange and an opportunity to learn about contemporary Indigenous life, ancestral traditions, and spiritual customs. The experience may include a walk up nearby San Luis Hill, a place connected to ceremonies and community traditions, while offering a deeper appreciation for the enduring Guaraní heritage that remains central to Paraguay’s national identity today.
Day 12 (Fri, March 12) - Monday Falls & Itaipu Dam
Today we journey toward the fascinating tri-border region where Paraguay, Brazil, and Argentina meet—a region shaped by immense rivers, subtropical forests, and some of South America’s most impressive natural and engineering achievements.
Our first major stop is Saltos del Monday, one of Paraguay’s most spectacular yet lesser-known waterfalls. Surrounded by lush greenery, the powerful cascades plunge dramatically into a rocky canyon, creating a striking landscape that many visitors are surprised to discover remains largely off the international tourist trail. Walking trails and viewpoints provide opportunities to appreciate both the beauty and raw force of the falls.
We then continue to the monumental Itaipu Dam, one of the largest hydroelectric projects ever constructed and an extraordinary symbol of cooperation between Paraguay and Brazil. Stretching across the Paraná River, Itaipú supplies the vast majority of Paraguay’s electricity and plays a major role in powering parts of Brazil as well.
During our visit, learn about the remarkable engineering behind the dam, the geopolitical partnership that made the project possible, and the enormous environmental and economic impact it has had on the region. Standing before the immense scale of the structure offers a fascinating contrast to the historic mission towns and rural communities explored earlier in the journey.
The subtropical energy of the Triple Frontier provides an exciting transition into the final chapter of the journey.
Day 13 (Sat, March 13) - Iguazu Falls & Bird Park
Today we experience the breathtaking Brazilian side of Iguazú Falls, one of the world’s most spectacular natural wonders and an unforgettable finale to our South American journey.
Surrounded by lush subtropical rainforest, panoramic walkways offer sweeping views across the immense system of waterfalls as hundreds of cascades thunder through the jungle below. The sheer scale, sound, and power of Iguazú create an experience that is both exhilarating and awe-inspiring.
For those seeking a more adventurous perspective, there is also the option to take an exciting boat excursion that approaches the falls from below, offering an up-close encounter with the mist, spray, and raw energy of the cascades.
We also visit Parque das Aves, an important conservation-focused bird park dedicated to the wildlife of the Atlantic Forest. Walk through immersive aviaries filled with toucans, macaws, flamingos, parrots, and other native species while learning about regional conservation efforts and biodiversity.
Tonight we celebrate our final evening together with a special farewell dining experience at the iconic Belmond Hotel das Cataratas, located inside Iguazú National Park.
As we celebrate our final evening together, it is a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the friendships, landscapes, cultures, and unforgettable experiences shared throughout this remarkable journey across Uruguay, Paraguay, and Brazil.

April is fall in South America, so expect a combination of warm and cool weather. Weather can vary greatly, so we recommend wearing layers.
Montevideo, Uruguay: Daily high temperatures in March are typically 25–28°C (77–82°F), with evenings temperatures are typically around 17–20°C (63–68°F). Humidity is generally moderate, and March is considered one of the nicest months to visit Uruguay.
Asuncion, Paraguay: Daily high temperatures in March are typically 30–34°C (86–93°F), with warm and sometimes humid conditions. With good pacing, air-conditioned transport and hotels, and thoughtful scheduling of activities, most travelers find the temperatures quite manageable.
Beach Time
While Uruguay is a favorite destination because of its beaches, we won’t have any 'dedicated' beach-lounging time on this tour as we have found most travelers on our tours prefer exploring sites and being active. During your free time, you will have the opportunity to enjoy the beautiful beaches at your own pace—whether you want to take a swim, stroll along the shore, or simply relax. While daily temps tends to be cool in Uruguay, the water is actually warmer than in peak summer!
