Day 3 (Sat, Sept 5) - Golden Circuit - Nature & Traditions

Today, we’ll exploring the Golden Circuit with an immersive cultural experience focused on Paraguay’s rich tradition of artisan crafts passed down through generations.

As our guest, you’ll enjoy a rare opportunity to visit several artisans in their home workshops. You will also have the opportunity to see traditional folk dances at the lunch venue. End the day with a visit to the most well-maintained Franciscan church with an ornately carved wooden alter carved by the indigenous artisans in 1772 (UNESCO Heritage-listed site).

Day 4 (Sun, Sept 6) - Popular Culture & Traditions

Day 5 (Mon, Sept 7) - Jesuit Museums & Towns

Begin the day with a visit to the Jesuit Museum in Santa María, housed in one of the original casas de los indios. The museum offers a glimpse into daily life during the Jesuit era and the lasting influence of the missions.

Next, explore a wildlife refuge—a 100-hectare property dedicated to the breeding, reproduction, and conservation of native species, with a special focus on those threatened with extinction.

Continue on to San Cosme y Damián, a Jesuit reduction unique for having remained active after the Jesuits’ expulsion. Its original church has been carefully renovated and is still in use by the local community.

Adjacent to the church, the Center for Astronomical and Planetary Interpretation features engaging presentations by local guides on the astronomical research of Jesuit priest Father Suárez, constellations of the southern hemisphere, and the Guaraní interpretations of the stars.

Day 6 (Tues, Sept 8) - Yerba Mate Tour & Jesuit Ruins

In the morning, visit a yerba mate plantation. The latin name for yerba mate is "Ilex paraguayensis", referring to Paraguay. Learn how this traditional Paraguayan tea is planted, harvested and prepared—as well as discover the important role yerba mate played during the Jesuit era and throughout the country’s history.

In the early afternoon, explore the Jesuit Missions of La Santísima Trinidad de Paraná and Jesús de Tavarangue, both designated UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 1993.

Afterward, continue on toward Iguazú Falls.

Day 7 (Wed, Sept 9) - Iguazu Falls & Parque das Aves

In the early morning, visit Parque das Aves, one of the world’s most respected bird parks. Home to over 900 birds from 150 species, many fly freely in large aviaries designed to replicate their natural subtropical forest habitat. In addition to its appeal as a visitor site, the park plays a key role in Atlantic Forest bird conservation.

Then visit the Brazilian side of Iguazú Falls. This side offers sweeping panoramic views of one of the most spectacular waterfall systems in the world—275 cascades spanning 1.2 km. Follow a walkway with multiple observation points, culminating in a platform at the base of the powerful Devil’s Throat.

In the afternoon, cross the border into Paraguay.

Day 8 (Thur, Sept 10) - Ybytyruzu Hills

The short hike to Salto de la Cantera in Ybyturuzú winds through lush forest and scenic viewpoints overlooking the rolling hills, before descending to a tranquil waterfall that tumbles into a crystal-clear natural pool surrounded by greenery.

Spend the afternoon surrounded by nature and tranquility — where spacious, luxurious rooms blend seamlessly into the natural landscape.

Day 9 (Fri, Sept 11) - Villarrica

After a day in nature, continue to Villarrica — one of Paraguay’s oldest and most cultured cities.

Stroll through the plazas, admire its colonial architecture, and visit the cathedral where a striking mural honors “Chiquitunga”, the first Paraguayan to be beatified. Villarrica offers a pleasant pause between nature and city life, where history and modern Paraguay meet.

In the afternoon, stop at Sapucai, an impressive railway museum that preserves Paraguay’s industrial heritage with restored locomotives, vintage tools, and stories from the nation’s early rail era.

Follow the old railway track past numerous historical train stations along the return journey to Asunción, traveling through scenic countryside before arriving back in the capital by evening.

Day 10 (Sat, Sept 12) - Asuncion

Enjoy a free day in Asunción to explore the city at your own pace.

We will provide some optional activities, or choose your own!

  • Early risers might join a bird-watching walk along the Costanera or in the Botanical Garden.
  • Visit nearby shops for Paraguayan souvenirs.
  • Photographic boat and bird watching tour on the Paraguay River (6-7 hours)
  • Art and culture lovers can visit the Museo del Barro, home to an extraordinary collection of indigenous, colonial, and contemporary art that reveals Paraguay’s diverse cultural identity.
  • In the afternoon, join locals in the cherished weekend tradition of “palmear” — a street festival in the historic downtown with music, crafts, and food.
  • In the late afternoon, stroll along the Costanera to see people with their friends and families, tereré in hand, savoring the evening along the bay.
  • Attend a soccer match to experience the South American passion!

Group Size

Our tours are designed for a maximum of 12 travelers, creating an intimate atmosphere that allows for personal attention and flexibility during the trip. Activity Level 

This trip should be a good fit for most travelers. We recommend adequate physical fitness to walk for an hour at a gentle pace.

Meals

This trip includes some group meals, so please let us know about any dietary restrictions well in advance. In smaller towns with limited dining options, we'll enjoy home-cooked, family-style meals. At times, we may offer a tasting of traditional dishes or a limited menu. Most dinners are not included, giving you the freedom to explore and dine where and when you’d like.

Cell phone coverage may not be available during the entire trip, but will be available during some portion of each day of the trip.

Weather

September is springtime in Paraguay, bringing warm and mostly sunny weather. Average daytime highs hover around 30°C (86°F) across much of the country, with the Chaco region reaching up to 35°C (95°F). Nights are mild, with lows around 16-17°C (mid-60s F). While the climate is generally pleasant, weather can be unpredictable, so we recommend wearing layers. Expect occasional bursts of rain (typically short bursts of rain on 8-9 days throughout the month). Rain offers slightly cooler temps and adds freshness to the spring atmosphere.

Accommodations

All accommodations are well-located, and have clean room with comfortable beds, en suite bathrooms, and AC. This tour includes unique and boutique accommodations with hospitality that capture the essence of the culture, as well as select luxury hotels. At Iguazu Falls it will be possible to upgrade to exclusive, luxury accommodations within the national park for a truly unique experience.
