Day 4 (Thurs, March 4) - Montevideo in Depth

Today is yours to enjoy at your own pace in Montevideo. Relax at a café, stroll along the rambla, explore local markets, or simply soak in the atmosphere of Uruguay’s capital city.

For those interested, there will also be the option to join a local guide to further explore the historic neighborhoods and cultural sites of Ciudad Vieja, Montevideo’s atmospheric old quarter.

Possible visits include the Museo del Carnaval, where you can learn about Uruguay’s unique Carnaval traditions and participate in an immersive candombe drumming experience; the Museo Andes 1972, dedicated to the remarkable story of survival following the 1972 Andes plane crash; and the Museo del Gaucho y de la Moneda, which explores Uruguay’s rural heritage, gaucho culture, and monetary history.

Additional museums, galleries, and cultural sites may also be visited depending on group interests and seasonal programming.

In the evening, we will attend a traditional murga performance. Murga is one of Uruguay’s most distinctive cultural expressions and an essential part of Carnaval season. Combining theater, satire, humor, and powerful multi-part harmonies, murgas perform lively largely a cappella songs that humorously critique society, politics, and major events from the past year. Even for visitors who do not speak Spanish fluently, the energy, emotion, costumes, and audience atmosphere make for a memorable cultural experience.

Today we explore Uruguay’s scenic Atlantic coast and the stylish seaside region surrounding Punta del Este.

Highlights include the Punta del Este lighthouse, the elegant coastal neighborhoods, the unique wavy bridge designed by engineer Lionel Viera in La Barra, and of course, the iconic “Fingers” sculpture emerging from the sand at Playa Brava.

We will also visit the remarkable Museo de Arte Contemporáneo Atchugarry (MACA), a striking contemporary art museum set within expansive natural grounds featuring sculpture gardens, rotating exhibitions, and the work of internationally recognized Uruguayan artist Pablo Atchugarry.

Later, we continue to the iconic Casapueblo, the former home and studio of artist Carlos Páez Vilaró. Day 6 (Sat, March 6)- Asuncion & Intro to Paraguay History

This morning, we bid farewell to Uruguay and take a short flight to Asunción, one of South America’s oldest capitals and a city that offers a fascinating contrast to the European influences of Uruguay.

As soon as you touch down in Asunción, you’ll notice a dramatic change in landscape and atmosphere. The city greets you with lush greenery, a stark contrast to Uruguay’s coastal scenery.

Upon arrival, enjoy an introductory tour of Asunción, a relaxed riverside capital where modern development blends with historic architecture, leafy neighborhoods, and strong Guaraní cultural traditions. Depending on timing and group interests, visits may include the historic center, the Palacio de López presidential palace, the National Pantheon of the Heroes, traditional markets, artisan shops, and scenic viewpoints along the Costanera overlooking the Paraguay River.

Asunción remains largely undiscovered by international tourism, offering visitors an authentic glimpse into everyday life in Paraguay and a very different perspective on South America than its more heavily visited neighbors.

This evening, settle into your hotel and enjoy a relaxed evening in the Paraguayan capital.

Day 9 (Tues, March 9) - Franciscan and Jesuit Legacies

Today we journey south into the Paraguayan countryside to explore the religious, artistic, and cultural legacies left by the Franciscan and Jesuit missions.

Our first major stop is Yaguarón, home to one of Paraguay’s most beautiful Franciscan churches, renowned for its richly carved wooden altar and colonial religious art. (Recognized by UNESCO)

Continuing southward, we visit Santa María de Fe, one of the historic Jesuit mission towns where elements of the region’s mission heritage remain visible in local traditions, museums, and daily life. We will have a guided tour of Jesuit museum housed in a casa de indios (indigenous houses) and see how the Guarani integrated their own culture into their art.

This evening, enjoy a peaceful overnight stay at Estancia Tacuaty, a traditional Paraguayan countryside estancia offering an authentic rural atmosphere and warm hospitality.

Day 10 (Wed, March 10) - Fauna & Constellations of the Southern Sky

Today we will visit a wildlife refuge dedicated to rehabilitating native Paraguayan animals. You will see native animals, such as the giant anteater, peccary, monkeys, and wild cats, as well as learn about ongoing conservation efforts and challenges.

Later, travel to San Cosme y Damián. This mission site is unique because it was never abandoned -  in fact, the church continues to be used to this day! For that reason it was not recognized by UNESCO, however it is now on the temporary list for UNESCO status.

In addition, the Astrological Center offers a presentation about the night sky of the Southern hemisphere and insight into the different interpretations of the constellations by the Spanish and Guarani. One of the priests at the missions was an astronomer and San Cosme and Damian was an important astronomical observatory during the 1700s. You will learn about Father Suarez' famous book published in 1720 predicting the exact dates of the eclipses and moon phases for the next century with astonishing precision.

End the day with a contemplative night walk through the ruins of the Jesuit Mission at Trinidad - night illumination and music make this night visit magical.

Day 12 (Fri, March 12) - Monday Falls & Itaipu Dam

Today we travel toward the tri-border region shared by Paraguay, Brazil, and Argentina.

Our first major stop is Saltos del Monday, one of Paraguay’s most spectacular yet lesser-known waterfalls. Surrounded by lush greenery, the powerful cascades plunge dramatically into a rocky canyon, creating a striking landscape that many visitors are surprised to discover remains largely off the international tourist trail. Walking trails and viewpoints provide opportunities to appreciate both the beauty and raw force of the falls.

We then continue to the monumental Itaipu Dam, one of the largest hydroelectric projects ever constructed. During our visit, learn about the remarkable engineering behind the dam, the geopolitical partnership that made the project possible, and the enormous environmental and economic impact it has had on the region. Standing before the immense scale of the structure offers a fascinating contrast to the historic mission towns and rural communities explored earlier in the journey.
