Daily Itinerary
Day 1 (Mon, March 22)- Arrival
As soon as you touch down in Asunción, you’ll notice the dramatic landscape and lush greenery.
We will meet you at the airport and provide a transfer to your hotel where you can rest after a long trip.
Day 2 (Tues, March 23)- Asuncion & Intro to Paraguay History
After a relaxed breakfast, enjoy an introductory tour of Asunción.
Asuncion is a relaxed riverside capital where modern development blends with historic architecture. We will visit the most important sites in the capital city including Manzana de la Rivera, the Palacio de López presidential palace, the House of Independence, the National Pantheon of the Heroes, traditional markets, and scenic viewpoints along the Costanera overlooking the Paraguay River.
Enjoy a lunch of traditional Paraguayan cuisine at one of the most iconic restaurants.
Day 3 (Wed, March 24) - Paraguayan Cultural Heritage
Today, journey east of Asunción into the countryside.
On Holy Wednesday, many Paraguayan families gather for chipa apo, the traditional preparation of chipa before Easter. More than simply baking, it is a time for family members, neighbors, and friends to come together, share stories, and prepare for Holy Week. The tradition dates back generations and remains an important expression of Paraguay’s cultural and religious heritage.
During this experience, you will travel to the countryside to join a local family as they take part in this cherished custom. It offers a unique opportunity to connect with local people, learn about Holy Week traditions firsthand, and experience a meaningful aspect of Paraguayan family and community life that is rarely seen by visitors.
Following the chipa-making experience, we will visit a local artisan who creates ñandutí, Paraguay's most famous traditional lace. Meaning "spider web" in Guaraní, ñandutí is known for its intricate circular patterns and vibrant colors.
In the afternoon, we will continue to Areguá, one of Paraguay's most charming colonial towns. Known for its artisan workshops, lakeside setting, and colorful streets, Areguá is a center for traditional pottery and a favorite destination for both locals and visitors. We will have time to explore the town, browse local crafts, and enjoy its relaxed atmosphere before returning to Asunción.
Day 4 (Thurs, March 25) - Franciscan and Jesuit Legacies
Today we journey south into the Paraguayan countryside to explore the religious, artistic, and cultural legacies left by the Franciscan and Jesuit missions.
Our first major stop is Yaguarón, home to one of Paraguay’s most beautiful Franciscan churches, renowned for its richly carved wooden altar and colonial religious art. (Recognized by UNESCO)
After lunch, we continue to San Ignacio Guazú, one of the earliest Jesuit mission settlements in the region. At the Jesuit Museum, we will learn about the history of the Jesuit reductions, where missionaries and Guaraní communities created unique settlements that became centers of education, music, agriculture, and faith.
In the evening, we visit the community of Tañarandy, renowned throughout Paraguay for its moving Holy Week traditions. We will have the opportunity to observe preparations and rehearsals for the upcoming celebration. Created by local artist and cultural promoter Koki Ruiz, Tañarandy has become one of the country's most important expressions of faith, art, and community, drawing thousands of participants and visitors each year.
This evening, enjoy a peaceful overnight stay in San Ignacio, the heart of Paraguay's Jesuit region.
Day 5 (Fri, March 26) - Good Friday Traditions & Mission Museums
Today we will visit Santa María de Fe, one of the historic Jesuit mission towns where elements of the region’s mission heritage remain visible in local traditions, museums, and daily life. We will have a guided tour of Jesuit museum housed in a casa de indios (indigenous houses) and see how the Guarani integrated their own culture into their art.
A visit to MUVA (Museo Viedma) offers a compelling introduction to the history and legacy of the Jesuit missions. Through the artwork of renowned Paraguayan artist Manuel Viedma and thoughtfully curated exhibits, the museum brings to life the encounter between Guaraní and Jesuit cultures that helped shape the identity of Paraguay.
Good Friday in Paraguay is a deeply spiritual and family-centered day, marked by traditions like quiet reflection, religious processions, and shared meals such as chipa and fish dishes. In Tañarandy, the evening transforms into a powerful visual experience, where thousands of candles and lanterns illuminate a solemn procession and staged reenactment of the Passion of Christ—one of the country’s most moving cultural and religious events.
Day 6 (Sat, March 27) - Fauna & Constellations of the Southern Sky
Today we will visit a wildlife refuge dedicated to rehabilitating native Paraguayan animals. You will see native animals, such as the giant anteater, peccary, monkeys, and wild cats, as well as learn about ongoing conservation efforts and challenges.
Later, travel to San Cosme y Damián. This mission site is unique because it was never abandoned - in fact, the church continues to be used to this day!
In addition, the Astrological Center offers a presentation about the night sky of the Southern hemisphere and insight into the different interpretations of the constellations by the Spanish and Guarani. One of the priests at the missions was an astronomer and San Cosme and Damian was an important astronomical observatory during the 1700s.
In the afternoon, we will visit an indigenous community. This is not a staged cultural performance, but rather an opportunity to respectfully visit a living community and gain insight into contemporary Mby’a Guaraní life. Through conversations and observation, you'll learn about daily life, traditions, language, education, spirituality, and the ways in which cultural practices are preserved and adapted today.
End the day with a contemplative night walk through the ruins of the Jesuit Mission at Trinidad - night illumination and music make this night-visit a magical experience.
Day 7 (Sun, March 28) - Yerba Mate, Jesuit Ruins
Today is Easter Sunday. The most significant public observances take place during the days leading up to Easter, particularly on Good Friday. Easter Sunday itself is generally a quieter occasion focused on family gatherings rather than large public celebrations.
Begin your day with an interesting tour and tasting experience at a yerba mate plantation. Discover the secrets behind Paraguay’s traditional beverage, from cultivation to tasting, while learning about its social and cultural significance.
Then, we will visit the UNESCO World Heritage Jesuit Missions, one of the cultural highlights of the region. As you wander through the stone ruins. a local guide will share the remarkable story of the Jesuit reductions, where Guaraní communities and Jesuit missionaries created thriving settlements that became centers of education, music, agriculture, and faith for 150 years. Through the stories, the ruins come to life, revealing a legacy that continues to influence Paraguayan culture, spirituality, and the widespread use of the Guaraní language today.
In the afternoon we will drive several hours to Caacupe where we will have a relaxed dinner and reflect on our week traveling through Paraguay together.
Day 8 (Mon, March 29) - Masks & Departure
This morning, we visit the home workshop of a traditional Paraguayan mask maker, where colorful wooden masks are still handcrafted using techniques passed down through generations. These masks play an important role in local festivals and folklore, and the visit offers a unique opportunity to meet the artisan, learn about the history and symbolism behind the masks, and gain insight into a living cultural tradition. Depending on the artisan's schedule, you may even have the chance to try your hand at painting a mask.
In the afternoon, we return to Asunción.
In the evening we will enjoy a farewell dinner with the opportunity reflecting on the rich cultural traditions, history, and personal connections experienced throughout our journey.
Day 9 (Tues, March 30) - Departure
For travelers continuing on to the Uruguay extension or flying to another destination, transfers will be provided to the airport.

Activity Level
This trip should be a good fit for most travelers. We recommend adequate physical fitness to climb three flights of stairs without stopping and the ability to walk for an hour at a gentle pace on cobblestone streets.

Weather
March marks the transition from summer to autumn in Paraguay. Days are typically warm, while mornings and evenings can be pleasantly cooler, especially outside of Asunción. Expect a mix of sunshine, humidity, and the possibility of occasional afternoon or evening rain showers.
Paraguay: Daily high temperatures are typically 27–33°C (80–91°F), with overnight lows generally ranging from 18–23°C (65–73°F). While warm weather is common, temperatures can occasionally be cooler following a rainstorm or cold front.
We recommend lightweight, breathable clothing for daytime activities, along with a light sweater or jacket for evenings and air-conditioned vehicles. Comfortable walking shoes, a hat, sunscreen, and a compact rain jacket or umbrella are also recommended.
