Daily Itinerary
Day 1 (Tues, March 30) - Arrival
We will meet you at the airport and provide a transfer to your hotel where you can rest after a long trip.
Day 2 (Wed, March 31) - Montevideo
Today we will explore Montevideo, Uruguay’s vibrant and laid-back capital city.
Upon arrival, enjoy a half-day panoramic introduction to Montevideo, exploring some of the city’s most emblematic neighborhoods, coastal avenues, plazas, and historic areas. With its blend of European influences, art deco architecture, lively cafés, and relaxed rhythm of life, Montevideo offers a very different perspective on South America.
The afternoon is yours to enjoy at your own pace. Relax at a café, stroll along the rambla, explore local markets, or simply soak in the atmosphere of Uruguay’s capital city.
In the evening, there will be the option to attend an intimate tango dinner show at Primuseum. Set within a historic home and antique-filled cultural space in Ciudad Vieja, Primuseum offers a warm and atmospheric introduction to the music, dance, and traditions of the Río de la Plata region. The experience combines live tango performances with a multi-course gourmet dinner in a small, intimate setting that feels far removed from the large-scale tourist productions found elsewhere in South America.
Day 3 (Thur, April 1) - Montevideo
Today is yours to explore Montevideo at your own pace.
After yesterday’s panoramic city tour, you may wish to explore the historic Ciudad Vieja (Old Town) in greater depth.
Those interested in Uruguay’s culture and history may choose to visit the Museo del Carnaval to learn about the country’s vibrant Carnaval traditions, the Museo Andes 1972 to discover the extraordinary story of survival following the 1972 Andes plane crash, or the Museo del Gaucho y de la Moneda, which explores Uruguay’s rural heritage, gaucho culture, and monetary history. Whether you choose museums, shopping, local cuisine, or simply soaking in the atmosphere, this free day offers an opportunity to experience Montevideo according to your own interests.
Day 4 (Fri, Apr 2) - Colonia del Sacramento
In the morning we will depart Montevideo and head west to Colonia del Sacramento.
Enjoy a guided tour of Colonia del Sacramento, a charming UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its cobblestone streets, historic architecture, and relaxed atmosphere.
Following the tour, there will be free time for lunch and to wander the picturesque streets, browse artisan shops, or simply soak in the ambiance along the Río de la Plata.
Day 5 (Sat, April 3) - Cultural Heritage: Winery & Estancia
Enjoy a gourmet lunch and wine tasting at a fifth-generation family winery, where traditions, hospitality, and a deep connection to the land have been passed down through generations. Surrounded by vineyards and rolling countryside, this experience offers a wonderful introduction to Uruguay’s emerging wine culture.
After lunch, journey east to a different type of countryside experience.
We will stay at a countryside estancia - a beautifully restored historic outpost that once served as the social and commercial heart of the community. Blending heritage, craftsmanship, and contemporary hospitality, this charming gathering place offers a glimpse into Uruguay’s rural past while showcasing the creativity and warmth that define the country today.
Day 6 (Sun, April 4) - Countryside Estancia
Nestled among the scenic sierras, the estancia offers a peaceful setting to connect with Uruguay's natural beauty.
This morning, enjoy the tranquility of the Uruguayan countryside. Choose between a guided horseback ride through rolling landscapes, resting, taking and stroll on the estancia's extensive grounds, or birdwatching. Remarkably, nearly half of all bird species recorded in Uruguay have been observed here, making it one of the country's finest locations for nature observation.
Enjoy a gourmet lunch featuring regional flavors before departing for the Atlantic coast.
In the afternoon, travel to one of Uruguay's charming coastal communities. Founded in the late 19th century by visionary entrepreneur Francisco Piria, Piriapolis combines beautiful beaches, historic architecture, and panoramic views from Cerro San Antonio, offering a more authentic and relaxed coastal experience.
Day 7 (Mon, April 5) - Punta del Este, MACA Sculpture Garden, & Casapueblo
Today we explore Uruguay’s scenic Atlantic coast and the stylish seaside region surrounding Punta del Este.
During your city tour, you will see the exact point where the Río de la Plata gradually becomes the Atlantic Ocean, as well as some of the region’s most famous landmarks and beaches. Highlights include the Punta del Este lighthouse, the elegant coastal neighborhoods, the unique wavy bridge designed by engineer Lionel Viera in La Barra, and of course, the iconic “Fingers” sculpture emerging from the sand at Playa Brava.
We will also visit the remarkable Museo de Arte Contemporáneo Atchugarry (MACA), a striking contemporary art museum set within expansive natural grounds featuring sculpture gardens, rotating exhibitions, and the work of internationally recognized Uruguayan artist Pablo Atchugarry.
Later, we continue to the iconic Casapueblo, the former home and studio of artist Carlos Páez Vilaró. Perched dramatically above the sea at Punta Ballena, the whitewashed structure resembles a Mediterranean village sculpted into the cliffs and is considered one of Uruguay’s most emblematic landmarks.
Day 8 (Tues, April 6) - Transfer to Airport
Return to Montevideo and to your point of departure - airport, ferry or hotel.
As your journey comes to an end, depart with a deeper understanding of the cultures, histories, landscapes, and traditions of Uruguay.

Activity Level
This trip should be a good fit for most travelers. We recommend adequate physical fitness to climb three flights of stairs without stopping and the ability to walk for an hour at a gentle pace on cobblestone streets.

Weather
March and April mark the beginning of autumn in Uruguay and are widely considered one of the most pleasant times of year to visit. Expect generally mild temperatures, comfortable sightseeing conditions, and fewer crowds than during the peak summer season. While most days are warm and enjoyable, weather can vary between mornings, afternoons, and evenings, so we recommend packing layers.
Montevideo, Colonia, and the Coast: Daily high temperatures typically range from 22–27°C (72–81°F), while overnight lows are generally 14–18°C (57–64°F). Coastal areas often enjoy cool ocean breezes, and evenings can feel cold, particularly near the water.
Uruguay's Interior and Sierras: Temperatures are often similar to the coast during the day, though mornings and evenings can be slightly cooler.
Rain is possible at any time of year, but prolonged periods of bad weather are uncommon. Overall, travelers can typically expect comfortable conditions for walking tours and exploring Uruguay's countryside and coastline.
Beach Time
While Uruguay is a favorite destination because of its beaches, we won’t have any 'dedicated' beach-lounging time on this tour as we have found most travelers on our tours prefer exploring sites and being active. While in Piriapolis and Punta del Este, you will have an opportunity to enjoy the beautiful beaches — whether you want to take a swim, stroll along the shore, or simply relax. While fall in Uruguay tends to be cool temps, the water is actually at its warmest!
